Autumn is in full swing in Grand Rapids—and what better way to celebrate the season than by strolling through downtown and enjoying a fun, community-driven display of creativity? The second annual Downtown Grand Rapids Scarecrow Contest runs from October 18 through October 31, 2025.

Here’s everything you should know about the event, why it's worth a visit, and how you can join in the fun.

🎃 What the Scarecrow Contest is All About

This year, approximately 34 local businesses have taken up the mantle of fall-festivity by creating their own scarecrow displays across downtown Grand Rapids.
Each storefront or business is decorated with a unique scarecrow theme—with fun, whimsy, a little bit of spooky and lots of autumn charm.

Visitors are invited to walk the downtown area, enjoy the creative displays, take photos, and vote online for their favorite scarecrow entry. Voting is open from October 18 to October 31.

At the end of the contest, the top 3 businesses earning the most votes will be awarded trophies—and, of course, bragging rights for the season.

🌆 Why It’s a Must-See

  • Local business engagement: The fact that dozens of storefronts have decorated shows how much downtown Grand Rapids is embracing the season—great for supporting local shops and discovering hidden gems.

  • Photo-op Galore: The creative scarecrows make perfect backgrounds for fall selfies or family outings—think golden leaves, handcrafted characters, and the lively streets of downtown.

  • Free: There’s no entry fee. Just show up, walk around, enjoy the ambiance, maybe grab a warm beverage and cast your vote.

  • Get out and explore: It’s a great reason to wander downtown, discover new shops, maybe stop for lunch or coffee, and make the day an outing rather than just a quick peek.

🔍 Tips for Making the Most of It

  • Start early in the contest window: While the displays are up all the way through October 31, going earlier means fewer crowds, better daylight for pictures, and full energy from the participating businesses.

  • Check the map: The event’s website provides a map of all participating businesses so you can plan your walking route.

  • Bring your camera/phone: Some of the displays are very creative—costumes, props, local themes—so you’ll want to capture them.

  • Vote for your favorite: Don’t forget to cast your vote online for the scarecrow you think deserves the top spot.

  • Dress for the weather: Late October in Grand Rapids can get chilly and windy—layers, comfortable shoes, maybe a scarf or hat will go a long way.

  • Extend your outing: After your scarecrow walk, maybe explore more of downtown—grab a coffee, do some shopping, or finish the evening with a fall-themed treat.

✅ In Short

If you’re looking for a seasonal activity that’s fun, local and photo-worthy, the Downtown Grand Rapids Scarecrow Contest ticks all the boxes. It’s a low-stress way to celebrate fall, support local businesses, and create a little fall memory in the heart of the city. Don’t miss it!
