Each May, the streets of Grand Rapids pulse with energy as thousands gather for one of Michigan’s most iconic traditions—the Fifth Third River Bank Run. Whether you're hitting the pavement or cheering from the sidelines, this event is more than just a race. It’s a celebration of perseverance, community, and the power of movement.

A Tradition Rooted in Motion

Since its first run in 1978, the River Bank Run has grown into the largest 25K road race in the country, attracting elite athletes, casual joggers, walkers, kids, and thousands of spectators. With a scenic route that winds through the heart of Grand Rapids and along the Grand River, it's a uniquely beautiful and inspiring experience for everyone involved.

For the Runners

Runners of all backgrounds and abilities are welcome, thanks to the variety of race options:

  • 25K Run – The headline event, drawing national-level talent and experienced distance runners.

  • 10K and 5K Runs – Great middle-distance options for both new and seasoned runners.

  • 5K Walk – A non-competitive option that’s inclusive for all ages and fitness levels.

  • Amway Jr. Run – A fun-filled kids’ event held the evening before race day.

Training programs, community group runs, and expert resources help runners prepare—because no matter the distance, crossing the finish line is always a personal triumph.

For the Spectators

You don’t have to run to be a vital part of race day. Spectators bring the energy that carries runners through every mile.

Where to Watch:

  • Downtown Start/Finish (Lyon & Monroe Ave.) – Catch the adrenaline of the starting gun and the emotion of the finish line.

  • Along the Grand River – Quieter stretches perfect for cheering with space to relax.

  • Designated Cheer Zones – High-energy spots with music, volunteers, and plenty of spirit.

What to Bring:

  • Creative signs

  • Cowbells or noisemakers

  • Snacks and coffee

  • Layers (Michigan weather can change fast!)

  • A smile—you’re making a difference!

Runners often say that crowd support is what gets them through the toughest parts of the race. So show up, make some noise, and know you're helping someone achieve their goal.

Beyond the Finish Line

After the races, the real celebration begins. The Finish Fest features music, giveaways, concessions and a joyful crowd of finishers and fans reliving the highlights. It’s a great time to meet up, snap some photos, and soak in the accomplishment—whether it was running 25 kilometers or cheering your heart out.

Run for a Cause

Every participant has the option to run for a local nonprofit partner, adding a deeper sense of purpose to every step. Donations and fundraising efforts support causes that directly impact the Grand Rapids community.

A Weekend That Moves Us All

Whether you're training for your first 10K, walking to support a cause, or simply cheering on friends and strangers alike, the Fifth Third River Bank Run is for you. It’s a reminder of what we can do—together. The rhythm of feet on pavement, cheers echoing off buildings, and the celebration of movement make this event something truly special.

Join us this May—for the run, the cheers, the cause, and the community.
