North Quarter Neighborhood
Originally farmland, Creston became a working class streetcar suburb of Grand Rapids in the late nineteenth century. With a train depot at the corner of Plainfield and Leonard and a streetcar line running north on Plainfield connecting to downtown, GR citizens found they were able and eager to spread out to the Creston neighborhood. The first neighborhood organization was formed in 1906 where the Creston name was derived.
Today, the Cheshire Village and Creston districts or “North Quarter” is roughy one square mile. With the Grand River to the west, College Avenue to the East, Knapp to the north, and Leonard to the south, Today the Creston-Cheshire district of Grand Rapids is better known as GR’s “playground.” Hosting bike trails that extend across the state, eight parks, the Grand River, excellent dining and shopping, this neighborhood is the best of both worlds when it comes to urban living that also celebrates natures.
From a real estate standpoint, the North Quarter has a strong and stable climate of properties, thriving businesses (Frosty Boy AND Creston Brewery, anyone?), a booming nightlife, and offers successful inner-city school programs. The communities here choose to renovate instead of replace so you are sure to notice the historic touches left and right.
