Paint can do so much to transform a space. Whether you have just moved into your home and want to add your touch, or you have lived in your home for years and are ready for an update, a little color can be truly dramatic. The reality, however, is that painting yourself can seem a daunting task. Painting a space involves priming, waiting, painting, waiting, and painting again. Or does it?

If you’ve stepped into Home Depot or any paint store recently, you’ve probably noticed the vast variety of self-priming paints available on the market. So you might be wondering: is priming even necessary?

Contractors don’t reinvent the wheel when it comes to paint. They stick with that they know – they prime, wait, and two-coat paint to ensure paint adhesion. For most contractors, it’s easier for them to paint and prime rather than using self-priming paint and potentially needing to redo the job.

Consumers have more freedom, however, and if we are realistic, less patience and time. Fortunately, self-priming paints have improved tremendously over the last few years.

If the following is true for your walls, you might consider self-priming paint a good idea:

  1. Your walls are smooth and not oil-based or glossy
  2. You are putting a similar or darker color over a lighter color
  3. You do not have stains or odors you need to cover

Behr is one of our favorite brands of self-priming paints. Be inspired by one of 2017s trending colors or go rogue and make your space truly unique.
